President (Owner), AP Campaigns                                                                              1/2003 - Present
A boutique consulting firm offering short-term project-based program management, surge support and capacity training for International Democracy & Governance programs in developing countries.  Also providing leadership, business development, and client management in the US for Mission Control (below), Digital Turf, membership, party, advocacy organizations, and corporations. Recent work:

STTA / Consultant, Democracy International, South Sudan (2/2015 – 5/2015)

Supported USAID-funded program called SUCCESS. Consulted with South Sudanese political parties to develop and implement party-specific work plans. Designed training program focused on the registration process; liaised with the Political Party Council and parties to assist with the development of a political party registration process. Worked with parties to develop registration plans.  Provided technical assistance to parties in their implementation of these plans. Recruited, hired and trained a team of 21 local (South Sudanese nationals) to support political parties capacity building and registration programs – particularity proud of achieving gender parity.

STTA / Consultant, National Democratic Institute (NDI): technical trainer, curriculum developer advisor, and program manager.  Trainer in leadership, advocacy, messaging, paid and earned communications, social media, organizational capacity building, membership and public organizing and mobilizing, fundraising and development, campaign and program planning for political parties, civil society and governance. Develop curriculum and trainer for political parties, civil society, and governance programs. Recent projects include advising, training and supporting programs for political parties in Libya (2013); civil society and women Parliamentarian in Burma (2013); Iranian diaspora advocacy activists and civil society leaders in Amsterdam (2013-4); Malaysian based civil society activists in Jakarta (2014), women leaders in political parties in Iraq (2008-2010), Burmese activists in Thailand (2009), and political parties in Kosovo (2001-2002).

Persuasion direct mail, new media and campaign communications consulting services for Democratic candidates, elected officials, party committees, initiative and referendum campaigns, labor unions and public interest advocacy organizations. Services include strategy & planning, message development, copywriting, online and print design, targeting, and mail production. National Democratic Institute 2011
Resident Country Director Rwanda (1-7/11) – Managed Political Party Programs focused on developing youth leadership and organizational capacity. Developed plans and curriculum for an 8-week intensive training school for two youth programs (rwandaypla.com) funded by USAID and the Belgian Government. Recruited and worked with a team of local Rwandan senior political leaders and international experts to serve as guest lecturers and mentors to participants. Reported to USAID & Belgian Governments and also met and worked with other funders while working on proposals.

Senior Program Manager Egypt (7/11-1/12) – Designed and managed large-scale multimedia and national field-based voter education program focused on the parliamentary elections called “Ally Sotak”. Using a team of Egyptian consultants we developed and produced print, digital, broadcast advertising, training videos, website, social media, and other collateral materials. The program included recruiting, training and managing a team of 8 national staff and 40 locally based STTA civil society leaders in the Governorates to serve as full-time Voter Education Coordinators who implemented over 300 unique events in just 3 months. Developed and managed complex budget, and reporting systems for accountability and M&E. Also served as an STO (Short term observer) for the Parliamentary elections.

President & Founder, Democratic GAIN   6/2003 - Present
Association that provides training, networking, career support and job placement services for over 30,000 individuals and more than 3,000 employers in all 50 US states who work in campaigns and elections. Oversee all elements of the organization including legal and programmatic framework, program and financial development, managing staff, and board, designing training curriculum, online technology, budgets and all fundraising efforts. Vice President, Mammen Pritchard     3/1999 – 3/2007

Principal Owner of Democratic and Progressive consulting firm that provided persuasion direct mail and communications consulting services to advocacy organizations, candidate and issue campaigns, national and state parties. Clients included: the AFL-CIO, DNC, DCCC, DLCC, EMILY’s List, and many candidate campaigns, state parties and ballot initiative and membership organizations.

National Political Director, Democratic National Committee (DNC)      11/2003 – 12/2004
[Took leave from consulting to serve at the DNC for the 2004 general election.] Managed political department including field, voter contact, state parties, and constituencies prior to the nomination. Post-nomination managed constituency operations, voter contact, and key liaison to Kerry Campaign. Managed multi-million dollar budget for paid communications and had seventy person direct reports.

President, Ballot Initiative Strategy Center      2/1999 – 3/2002
Managed start-up non-profit 501 C(3) and 501 C(4) dedicated to coordinating research, campaign services, and messages around state ballot measures. Developed programs including training for campaign staff, conferences for state-based political leaders, research and financial tracking program. Served on the Board for another nine years after serving as staff.

Regional Political Director, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee      1997 – 1998
Recruited candidates for Congress in targeted districts. Helped candidates hire staff, develop consulting teams, write and implement campaign plans. Worked with state parties and the Democratic National Committee to develop coordinated campaign plans.
